5 Best Budget Kitchen Decorating Ideas

Great ideas for freshening your kitchen on a tight budget!
Need some great ideas to freshen up that kitchen with a very limited budget? Your only limitations are your creativity and a little elbow grease!

1.Repaint those cabinets! Unless you have high quality wood cabinets, chances are they could use some rejuvenation, and painted finishes are very hot! There are many techniques you can easily learn to give your kitchen cabinets an expensive designer look. Crackling, faux finishing, and glazing are all quite simple and cost effective. Try the Internet for some guidance; most major paint manufacturers have websites with great instructions! Try www.dutchboy.com or www.fauxlikeapro.com

2.Paint those walls! These days our kitchens are the hub of the home, and we all feel more comfortable in rooms that offer mood and character.

If you have wood cabinets, color on the walls will make the wood appear richer, and will emphasize your accessories.

3.Make carved look molding and appliqus. There are several techniques for creating beautiful moldings and architectural embellishments for very little money. You can either use joint compound and a cake-decorating bag to create beautiful designs on plain wood strips, then prime and paint, or use my salt dough method. I use the salt dough recipes that children often use for making Christmas decorations. I cut the dough into simple shapes such as leaves, ropes, or scrolls. Then let dry or bake as the recipe dictates. Now simply use a glue gun to attach to wood strips, prime and paint! This gives you a little more control over the finished piece, and also is a lot cheaper! Hint: If you use this method for appliqus, paint before you attach to the wall. These are great attached to the front of cabinet doors, or over doorways. See the two recipes I use below.

Salt Dough Recipe

2 cups flour cup salt Water added by the tablespoon until the desired consistency 1-2 tablespoons salad oil added to help keep it from drying and cracking

Place pieces on a cookie sheet in a 250-degree oven for 1 hour, then check every 15 minutes until hard, but not overly brown.

Cornstarch Recipe (While this recipe is a little more inconvenient because of the air drying, it yields a much finer product, almost like porcelain.)

2 Cups Baking Soda 1-Cup Cornstarch 1 cups water

Heat in a saucepan until thick, let cool, and then knead out on a board dusted with cornstarch. Cut or work into desired shapes, then let air dry at least 24 hours or more.

4.Use fabric in your kitchen. Years ago, there was a belief that you shouldnt use fabric in a kitchen because of the grease and food splatters, and the difficulty cleaning. Nowadays, most fabrics can be thrown in the washer and dryer, so go ahead and use it! It softens the kitchen, can add romance or charm, and makes it feel like a warm connection to the rest of your house, instead of a cold utilitarian space. Curtains or valances, appliance covers, and table runners all can be easily stitched at home. (Or fused with an iron and hem tape available at your sewing or craft store.) Fabric does not have to be expensive either. Flat twin sheets are always a great value, and can be gotten on sale for as little as 3 dollars. Keep an eye out at garage sales for sheets, quilts, tablecloths, and even clothing that have your homes color schemes.

5.Give yourself stone counters for less than $40! Ok, ordinarily even $40 for one project is a little much for me, but this one has such a large impact and is so easy, that its definitely worth it! The secret? Paint! Get a book from the library, or search the Internet for instructions on the stone faux finish of your choice, (practice on cardboard first!) then follow these steps. For this to be successful, there is one step you cannot skimp on. Prime your countertops with a primer specially made for non-porous surfaces!!! Bin or KILZ are both good brands. (I also like to use their water-based variety, check the can carefully!) Now paint your faux finish. Allow to dry thoroughly, 24 hours is best. Now simply give it 4 or 5 coats of water-based polyurethane, let dry, and enjoy years of a beautiful kitchen! Save some of your original paint so if you ever do get a chip, touch up is a breeze. I promise you, visitors to your home will be hard pressed to tell that it isnt a $5000 counter!

5 Kitchen Decorating Ideas For A Whole New Look

Designing a kitchen can be exciting and there are so many decorating ideas that you could try. Often the kitchen is a room in which most people spend a lot of their time. Whether it is to entertain friends and family or simply to cook the family meals, the kitchen really is the centerpiece in most homes. So, if you are thinking of decorating it, it would be a good idea to spend time researching and finding the right ideas to suit your home as well as your personality.

Finding the Right Kitchen Decorating Ideas to Suit You

There are many ways in which you can make your kitchen look homely and sophisticated or modern and relaxed. From choosing different tiles to rearranging the whole design, you should definitely be able to come up with something that suits your family needs as long as you do the right amount of research.

You can find various different designs in magazines as well as on the internet. The internet has a huge range of ideas to be found, though it might take you a long time to come up with one which you like, so ensure that you have quite a few hours to spare when you set off on your search!

Going to your local library might also be a good idea as an aid in your search. There you will find plenty of interior design books which will also offer ideas as to what you could go for. Usually even little steps can be taken to drastically improve the look of the kitchen - it doesn't always have to be the big changes that make a difference! For example, if you have a table, a simple centerpiece on the table could add that extra touch that it was missing. A tablecloth could also be something different to try. Basically you need to use as much imagination as you can in order to let your personality shine through.

If you are looking to redecorate the whole kitchen then you will need paint or wallpaper as well as paintbrushes, tiles and accessories. You may want to think about moving the sink or boiler within your home but generally that can cost a lot of money and it is also a lot of hassle! So, avoid changing the whole layout around if possible. Of course you could always replace old looking cupboards and worktops with more modern designs if you want to, and you can replace an old looking cooker and appliances with newer ones and that should help to change the look of the kitchen.

Overall it is completely up to you as to how you want to design the kitchen. You need to ensure that you are happy with the designs and you also need to make sure that you have spent enough time researching and looking for new designs. Redecorating should never be a rushed job otherwise it may turn out all wrong!

Kitchen Designs and Ideas

When you're trying think of potential kitchen designs it can be a long and difficult process. After all there are so many colour schemes and cabinet designs and appliances and a hundred other things to choose from, that getting the right combination is incredibly difficult.

The best way to sort through everything is to come up with a few designs based on one central theme for your kitchen. For example, many people like the kitchen styles that are synonymous with a certain country or region, hence why Italian and Spanish kitchen design are so popular. By choosing a theme you can narrow down your search and look for much more specific things to build up your kitchen design.

or some others, their designs will be dictated by the shape and size of their kitchen.

For instance if you have to plan a small kitchen, then your choices will be much more limited and your designs will have to be built around coming up with clever storage solutions and fitting things in.

A great way of finding focus when things get confusing is to think about exactly what you want from your kitchen and what you're trying to achieve. You can then write a list of all the essential things you need and go from there. The style and look can come much later and you can find ideas from showrooms and looking online.

Also get hold of some software to play around with. This can be incredibly beneficial because you can input the exact dimensions of your kitchen into the system and then play around with different colour schemes and styles. This can prove an excellent source of inspiration if you're struggling to come up with kitchen designs you like.

The basic rule of kitchen design is very simple - plan. By planning ahead and thinking about every tiny detail, you'll leave yourself less open to things going wrong. The problem with kitchen design is that one small thing can trigger and domino effect and send your whole vision tumbling down. Don't get caught out like this and plan for everything well in advance.

Understanding the Basics of Kitchen Design

For most people, kitchen design is all about updating the appliances and cabinetry in the kitchen. But for me, it is all about getting down to the drawing board and creating a new layout altogether. The entire flow of the kitchen should change when you remodel it.

The focus should be to improvise on the functionality while keeping the aesthetic part in mind. There are some really old tried and tested kitchen design plans that work. You should choose one from amongst these based on the size and shape of your kitchen.

For long and narrow kitchens

If you have a long and narrow kitchen then you might want to opt for the one wall kitchen design. This is one of the most effective and inexpensive designs.

Unlike the kitchen triangle, which is a very popular design this one has a linear design. It paves way for smooth functioning and flow of work in the kitchen.

But if you want to maximize the storage space, then this is not the very best design. You might have to use the L shaped design plans along with this one.

The classic triangle

The classic triangle is undoubtedly one of the most famous kitchen designs to have been ever invented. A triangle is formed with the sink, the oven/stove and the refrigerator at each ends. The distance between these three is maintained at optimum levels. Several designs like the corridor design use the classic kitchen triangle to maximize its effectiveness. It brings in more storage space into the kitchen.

The L shaped design

The L shaped design is perfect for large kitchens that always seem crowded. It does away with the storage woes completely and the most important part is that it still uses the classic kitchen triangle.

Decorating Your Kitchen In Country Style

Decorating your kitchen with a country flair is a relatively easy task. To start, you will need to find the perfect curtains to accent your windows and begin to lay down the base for your country design.

Country curtains can come in a variety of colors and patterns, though checkered patterns will definitely send the message that you are going for a country look. Deep blues, reds, and whites are also great for country kitchens, as the country look also tends to be a bit patriotic as well. Curtains in patterns that look like quilt work will also give your kitchen the charm and comfort of a country kitchen.

Even the hooks used to

hold up the country kitchen curtains can add another element to the overall look. Hooks in country colors and in designs such as stars, hearts, pine cones, elks, and oversized buttons look great when paired with country curtains.

After determining the pattern and design that will be used for the curtains, the same pattern and design can be used for the placements and other kitchen linens. Or, other country patterns can be selected instead, so long as care is taken to make sure the varying patterns work nicely with each other and do not clash. Iron napkin holders molded into the shapes of birds, trees, animals and stars are great for creating a tidy appearance while maintaining country charm.

Country kitchen decorating can be further enhanced by selecting the right type of rug to place on the floor. Rugs make cooking and using the kitchen more comfortable on the feet while also helping to pull the room together from floor to ceiling. Country kitchen rugs can be found in the same types of designs and patterns as other kitchen linens. Woven rag rugs are ideal for country kitchen d?cor. Add a few pieces of your favorite country-inspired pottery throughout the kitchen and you will have a charming look that you will be sure to love!

Adding an Italian Touch to Your Kitchen

Have you always dreamed of taking vacation to Italy? It's hard to think of Italy without automatically thinking about food - especially all the amazing foods that are so distinctive to Italy. Even if you can't go to Italy, you can bring Italy to your life by using Tuscan kitchen designs in your home decorating.

Tuscan kitchen designs focus on bringing the warmth and comfort that is a part of Italy into your home. You can accomplish this easily by thinking of the colors and textures that are so common to Italy, especially the Tuscan region.

First, a central theme of Tuscan kitchen designs is to focus on light.

The Tuscan style starts with warm colors and plenty of sunlight. Italian kitchen color basics include colors such as sienna, terracotta, sepia, and golden sun colors. If you have a large kitchen window, you'll want to leave it uncovered by window treatments to allow as much natural light in as possible. Another great option is to consider carefully placed sky-lights.

Italy is also the land of amazing pottery, ceramics, statues, and terraces. When you bring these elements into Tuscan kitchen design, your kitchen becomes a welcome center of the home. You can add these Tuscan touches by including mosaic tiles, wrought iron, textured plaster walls, ceramic, and Italian styled dinnerware.

Another element of Tuscan kitchen designs is casual elegance. Tuscan kitchen designs incorporate a great deal of natural wood, like a dark stained oak or natural pine. In Italian kitchens, you'll find some open cabinets, hanging pot racks, and large family tables. Sometimes the kitchen table is weathered with lots of scratches and nicks. This doesn't detract from the beauty of the table, rather encourages the perception that the kitchen is the center of the family - used for discussions, projects and of course, those all important family meals. Scratches give the wood an antique look which is so common with Tuscan kitchen design.

One technique that combines some of the standard elements of Tuscan kitchen design and kitchen color basics is to consider having your kitchen walls plastered with a tinted glaze. The plaster builds that traditional Italian plaster look, while the colored glaze adds warmth to the walls. A glaze will look different at various times throughout the day and reflect the sunlight throughout the kitchen.

When it comes to fitting your kitchen with fixtures, think about items like a marble sink or a farm sink. Ceramic or terracotta tiles add warmth, or hardwood floors are another option to make that traditional Tuscan feeling.

Tuscan kitchens encourage a family to gather together in the kitchen and enjoy the warmth and comfort of the kitchen. It's a beautiful and popular look for today's kitchens.

The Best Kept Secrets In Kitchen Designs

It has often been said that the heart of the home is the kitchen. If that is really true, then why is it that some kitchen designs just dont seem to support more than one cook or guest at a time? You can turn your kitchen into a functional and beautiful workspace and gathering place for the entire family. Even if you have limited square footage, there just may be more room for expansion, storage, and oh yeah, cooking in your kitchen than you think.

Counters & Cabinets

Storage is definitely a consideration in designing a functional kitchen. If you are limited by floor space, just look up.

There is often a great deal of space between the counter tops and ceiling that just isnt being used in a kitchen. Look at the space above the refrigerator. Is yours just collecting dust or take out menus? If so, add a cabinet and youve got a great place to store seldom used platters or treats you want to keep hidden from the children.

Kitchen cabinets also dont have to be limited to one side of the countertop. If your kitchen design has a peninsula or island, you can use the ends and back side for more cabinet storage space.
Kitchen cabinets come in more styles and finishes that you can imagine. However, if your budget is limited then you dont need to replace them for an entirely new look. Cabinet refacing lets you select cabinet patterns that are up to date and beautiful.

New countertops dont always need to be included in this home improvement project either. Laminate countertops come with repair strips that will give new life to a worn surface.

Laying Out Completely New Kitchen Designs

If your budget calls for a complete renovation, then now is the time to really think about layouts and maybe calling in some specialist. The basic theory is that there should be no more than 2 steps between work stations. That means you should be able to go from the sink to stove in 2 steps; from the range to the refrigerator in 2 steps and so on. However, with todays extra large sized kitchens thats not the case any more. You still should choose layouts that consider how much time it takes to accomplish the normal tasks of putting dishes away from the dishwasher or getting foods from the refrigerator to the stove.

The newest gadgets in these mega kitchens make timesaving and energy efficiency into an art form. There are refrigerator drawers right next to the range and microwaves that brew your coffee while making your toast!

Fixtures and Furniture

The finishing touches are what make kitchen designs more inviting than ever. The furnishings, light fixtures and even the cabinet hardware can make kitchens into real living rooms. Look for task lighting that can highlight work spaces and then radiant lighting for atmosphere. You can even turn the legs of old furniture or newel posts into bases for centre islands to make you kitchen furnishings blend with the rest of the house. Get creative and enjoy doing much more than cooking in your new kitchen.

Kitchen Remodeling 5 Unique Ideas

Unique kitchen remodeling ideas do not have to be out of this world. In the world of designs and styles, people tend to experiment on things just to come up with something unique. The idea is to create unique kitchen remodeling ideas based on existing materials and use them like they had never been used before.

Here's how:

1. Themed concepts

If you want to have unique kitchen remodeling ideas, you can start with themed ideas. Maybe you would want that classical kitchen design back in King Arthur's palace. With this, you need to come up with more wood designs that are based on mahogany or other wood types that depict classical era.

You may also incorporate futuristic theme by using the elements of stainless steel. Kitchen counter tops that are made of stainless can be the first factor to consider.

2. Color combination

One of the factors to consider when coming up with unique kitchen remodeling ideas is trying to combine colors. Most people are afraid on color combination thinking that one color may not harmonize or blend with the other. But that is what the whole idea is all about. It is the contrast that makes it more unique. As far as the contrast is not that absurd or simply unpleasing to the eye, you can combine as many colors as you want.

3. Lighting

Good, remarkable lighting can emphasize a certain design in your kitchen. By providing accent lighting, you can draw attention to your original displays or extraordinary architectural designs. The idea is to focus things that will liven up your kitchen area.

4. Layout

Unique kitchen remodeling ideas can be directly proportionate to the layout of the cabinets and other features in the kitchen. The way you have created the layout will bring out your fresh ideas.

5. Customized cabinets

Kitchen Design Ideas By Damian Sofsia

The beauty of the kitchen actually depends on its design. No matter how much space you have and what appliances you have, a suitable design will make a lot of difference to your kitchen. It is not that easy to come up with the right design, so it would be your task to educate your designer about the requirements and priorities of your kitchen.

Consider whether the kitchen is merely a place for you to prepare meals, or if it also serves as a place where you have family gatherings and entertain close friends. Consider how your meals are prepared and also what type of appliances you have or are planning to purchase.

Once all these points have been considered then you move to other crucial points, such as architecture, color schemes, kitchen cabinets, lighting, faucets, sinks, fixtures, countertops and furniture. Modern kitchens these days mostly have the island concept. A kitchen island is normally placed in the middle of the kitchen and serves as a place for you to store most of your kitchen items, and provides additional countertop space, too.

The best place for you to obtain some ideas for kitchen designs would be in home-related magazines like Kitchen Design & Remodeling, Kitchen & Bath Ideas, Beautiful Kitchens, Kitchen Planning Guide, Kitchen Makeovers, 50 Dream Kitchens, Better Homes, Decorating, Renovation Style, Beautiful Homes, Creative Home, and Before & After. You also have the option of dropping by the nearest kitchen showrooms to have a first-hand look at the available kitchen models.
